Indian Cardiovascular surgeon with Padma Bhushan

Dr.Venugopal, the Director of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), was born on July 6, 1942. He is a leading heart surgeon of India and is known for his research in stem cells. He carried out India's first heart transplant on August 3, 1994. Venugopal has trained hundreds of students in open heart surgery in his career. He joined AIIMS in 1959 as an undergraduate. He got the title of best undergraduate and received the gold medal from the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

In April 2011, he started an indefinite hunger strike to pressurize the Indian Government to accept his demands on corruption.
